News and notes as the Capitals celebrate their 6-5 overtime victory against the Detroit Red Wings with a team Super Bowl party:

Carrick-ature: Defenseman Connor Carrick earned two assists and was a plus-2, marking his first career multi-point game.  “He’s still learning the game,” Capitals coach Adam Oates said. “It can be overwhelming at times. They have some Stanley Cup Champions over there coming at him, one of the best puck handling teams there is. I’m sure at times it’s overwhelming, but I thought all-in-all he hung in there and did a great job.”

Ovi to the rescue: Alex Ovechkin’s overtime goal was his league-leading 39th of the season, his 15th on the power play and his sixth game winner. Ovechkin is tied for third in career overtime goals, one behind Patrik Elias and three behind Jaromir Jagr.

ChimWardo:  Joel Ward registered three points (2g, 1a), marking his fifth multi-point game of the season. He has a goal in three consecutive games, tying his longest of the season. Ward matched his career high with his 17th goal of the season. He last hit 17 goals as a member of the Nashville Predators in 2008-09. Linemate Jason Chimera recorded three points (1g, 2a), marking his fourth multi-point game of the season.Chimera has scored a goal in two straight games.

10 for Carly: Defenseman John Carlson scored his career-high 10th goal of the season and led all skaters in ice time (28:16). Carlson has earned a point in three consecutive games  and has six points in his last five games.

Tricky Nicky: Nicklas Backstrom picked up two assists, giving him 28 points in his last 28 games.He has assisted on 11 of Ovechkin’s 15 power-play goals this season.

Moving on: Marty Erat now has five assists in his last five games.

Quick on the draw:  Jay Beagle won 14 of 19 faceoffs (74 percent) and Eric Fehr won 10 of 12 faceoffs (83 percent).

Etcetera: The Caps are  17-8-2 when scoring first and 10-2-1 when scoring two or more power-play goals. The Caps are 6 for 18 (33.3 percent) on the power play in their last four games. The Caps are now 15-6-1at home on Super Bowl Sundays.

Monday: The Caps will practice at 11 a.m. at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Monday. They are expected to get the day off on Wednesday.
