The shots fired between Team USA and Team Russia were not limited to the ice in their first meeting of these Winter Olympics.
Following the Americans’ 3-2 shootout win, Russia’s 24-year-old defenseman Slava Voynov speculated that Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick might have intentionally dislodged the net seconds before Fedor Tyutin scored what would have been the go-ahead goal for Russia with 4:40 remaining in regulation.
“I play with him,” Voynov told reporters after the game. “I know that's his style.”
Love to be in the Kings locker room when Voynov and Quick reunite following these Games.
Replays showed that Quick’s left skate knocked the right post off its mooring seconds before the Tutin’s goal. A quick review by the officials resulted in the goal being waved off.
For what it’s worth, Quick told Pierre McGuire after the game that he noticed the net was dislodged following the play and that he was hoping the net came off its peg before Tyutin’s goal and not after.
