The stage is set for the women’s CAA final with this season’s regular season champion, James Madison, set to take on last season’s CAA tournament champion, Delaware.
Madison will be led by CAA Player of the Year Kirby Burkholder, whose big day on Saturday helped propel the Dukes over Drexel.
Madison had been eliminated from the conference tournament in each of the past two seasons by Drexel, but finally managed to return the favor Saturday with a 55-43 win in the semifinals. Burkholder set a tournament record with 22 rebounds, tying the third-best single-game total for rebounds in CAA history.
Delaware got its own big performance Saturday from senior Kelsey Buchanan who recorded a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to help the Blue Hens knock off Charleston 60-52.
Charleston actually led by one at halftime, but thanks to Delaware's stout defense, the Cougars only managed to shoot 27.7 percent for the game and could not keep up with the Blue Hens.
Sunday’s matchup will be the third time Madison and Delaware have squared off this season. Madison won both of those previous meetings. The last time both teams met in the conference finals was in 2011, a game the Dukes also won.
Although Madison is coming into this game having won 17 of 18 total conference matchups this season, Delaware is currently on its own streak with eight straight CAA tournament wins.
With the conference championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on the line, the stakes couldn’t be higher for this big time matchup and you can catch it live on CSN! Tip-off is at 12 p.m.
