Maryland quarterback Perry Hills has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week after helping spark the Terrapins to a 36-27 road win over Temple, the league announced Monday. After becoming the first Maryland freshman to start a season opener since 1999 against William & Mary, Hills went 11 of 21 for 190 yards while generating three touchdowns against the Owls. Hills tossed a 22-yard score to tight end Matt Furstenberg in the second quarter and later found wide receiver Marcus Leak for a 32-yard strike. He also found the zone on the ground, rushing in from 11 yards. After Temple cut a 23-point halftime deficit to 29-27 midway through the fourth quarter, Hills directed Maryland on a decisive scoring drive. His 38-yard pass to Stefon Diggs on third and 11 moved the chains - and the ball to the Owls 12-yard line. Running back Justus Pickett capped the drive with a 6-yard TD run as the Terps avenged a 31-point loss to the Owls the previous season."I knew we needed to score," Hills said, the Associated Press reported. "I had to stay calm out there. Calm and confident. That's what we did."Maryland returns home Saturday to face Connecticut, the program Randy Edsall coached before taking over in College Park.
