RICHMOND—Redskins defensive end Jason Hatcher is nearing a return to the field, according to Coach Jay Gruden.
“He’s doing a great job,” Gruden said after Monday's practice. “I watch him out there doing individual drills and working. He’s very, very close. I can tell you that.”
Hatcher had his left knee scoped by Dr. James Andrews in late June after experiencing some discomfort in the joint in OTAs. The original prognosis was a 4-6 week recovery period but the Redskins have opted to take things a little more slowly with the 32-year old.
“It’s up to [head athletic trainer] Larry [Hess] and Hatcher,” Gruden said, asked when exactly Hatcher will return.
With the Patriots in town this week for joint practices and the preseason opener Thursday at FedEx Field, it would seem possible that Hatcher could return as soon as next week.
