Who was the last great Redskins punt returner? It's been a while. Deion Sanders played in Washington for a stretch, but his explosive days were way gone by then. The last great Skins returner would probably be Brian Mitchell, but it's been more than a decade since he last wore burgundy and gold. The team could desperately use some explosive special teams plays this season, and a strong punt return game would be a big help.
Looking at the projected 2014 roster, a few players could emerge as punt returners. Richard Crawford, who missed the 2013 season with a knee injury, looked like a good candidate to return punts in the late portion of the 2012 season. Will he still have the lateral movement and quickness needed to evade tacklers after the knee surgery? What about newly signed receiver Andre Roberts, late of the Cardinals? Roberts is a bonafide speedster, but has not been a consistent kick returner since the 2010 season.
Another player on the roster possesses all the skills needed to return punts: DeSean Jackson. D-Jax has the speed, the moves, the vision, but he may also be too valuable of a commodity to risk on special teams.
So who emerges as the Redskins regular punt returner? Crawford? Roberts? Is there a sleeper out there?
