News and notes as the Capitals [38-30-13, 89 points] close out their season against the Tampa Bay Lightning [45-27-9, 99 points] today at Verizon  Center [3 p.m., CSN]:


This was supposed to be Braden Holtby’s breakout season. The year he took the NHL by storm, played his way onto the Canadian Olympic team and carried the Capitals deep into the playoffs.


News and notes as the Capitals practiced for the final time of the 2013-14 season Saturday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex:


The Capitals conducted an optional practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Saturday and among those who took the option not to participate was head coach Adam Oates.


Several Capitals admitted wondering what kind of reception they would receive from fans Friday night in the first meaningless April hockey game at Verizon  Center in seven years.
